For Parents

Dear Parent/Guardian,

An exciting new program is now being offered in Raleigh County called Communities In Schools (CIS). CIS is an organization that has been around nationally for over 40 years.  The purpose of the program is to bring community resources into schools to empower success for all students.

I am writing to introduce myself as the CIS Site Coordinator for Beckley Elementary. I will be assessing the needs of the school and providing general supports as well as supporting a smaller group of students on an individual basis. As the Site Coordinator, I will meet with these students to determine what would be of most benefit to them. Throughout the year, I will monitor each student’s progress to ensure that the resources in place are delivering positive results. Our goal is to help students overcome obstacles and provide them encouragement for success in the future.

This permission slip is being sent out to all students in the school. If you do not want your child to participate in the Communities In Schools program, please print and complete the form below and return it to the school.

By not returning the form, you grant the school permission to have your child participate in the program and authorize the release of your child’s FERPA-protected educational records (e.g., attendance, transcripts, discipline, etc.) for the purpose of setting goals and monitoring progress throughout the year.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the CIS program, please contact me.

Thank you,

Nichole Shrewsbury-Hicks

As a parent of a student at Beckley Elementary School, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teachers and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

  • Whether WV Dept. of Education has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.

  • Whether WV Dept. of Education has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances.

  • The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.

Whether any teachers’ aides or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications.

If you would like to receive any of this information, please contact the Raleigh County Board of Education.
